Chapter Thirty

POSTMORTEM

“There he is.”

“Welcome back to the land of the living.”

Sinuses on fire. Eyelids like sandpaper. Dizziness despite lying down. The sense that his head had been fused to the ground.

“Can you talk?”

Someone removed the smelling salts and stepped back. Devon blinked despite the pain and realized he was on the alley floor.

Darkness intercut by flashlights weaving this way and that. The vague awareness that people were chatting nearby. Their soles tapping on the ground sent pain through Devon’s skull.

“I’m guessing this means I’m not dead.”

“Au contraire. I am St. Peter and these are my gates. We need to talk about your sins, young man. They are legion.”

Okay, that voice was old pal Detective Jimmy Moore. Tired of the ribbing, Devon tried to sit up. Moore offered a hand.

Devon leaned against the brick wall. He was pretty sure someone had urinated on it not long ago.

“What happened?”

“You weren’t shot, which is amazing given how goddamn many shell casings we found at the other end of the street. So maybe despite your sins, an angel did intervene. Judging from all these shattered bricks on the ground, I’d say someone let loose on you with a very powerful weapon that they weren’t too skilled at aiming. Tore some chunks out of the wall, one of which hit that hard head of yours.”

“Better that than a bullet, I guess.”

Devon tried to move again, then felt dizzier. He leaned over.

“You gonna puke? If so, aim away from my shoes.”
